Foreign Minister Stavros Dimas participated in the 16th informal meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Mediterranean Forum (FOROMED), in Rome, on February 20. The FOROMED – in which, France, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Malta and Portugal also took part - focused mainly on the situation in Syria with all participants underlining the need for an immediate end to violence and attacks against civilians.

The FOROMED Foreign Ministers also backed a peaceful resolution of the crisis which would lead to a democratic Syria, by supporting efforts by the United Nations and the Arab League. They also welcomed the establishment of a "Friends of the Syrian People Group," who are to meet for the first time in Tunis on February 24.

On the sidelines of the conference, Dimas held meetings with his counterparts from Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, as well as with Italy’s FM, Giulio Terzi. Following talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, it was announced that Greece and Egypt have agreed to resume talks, on the delineation of an offshore economic exploitation zone.
